About Dayton OH
Dayton is the 6th biggest city in the state of Ohio, which also serves as the seat of Montgomery County. It is as well the principal city in the Dayton Metropolitan region that is the 4th biggest in the state of Ohio. Dayton was established in the late 1790s by 12 settlers who were referred to as the Thompson Party. This group traveled from the City of Cincinnati on the Great Miami River, and ultimately landed at the future site of the city where they encountered 2 settlements of Amerindian tribes. In the late 18th century, the Mad River Road was laid out and became the very first overland link between Dayton and Cincinnati. The state of Ohio entered the Union in the early 19th century, and Dayton was incorporated as a city in 1805.
It was named in honor of Jonathan Dayton who served as a captain in the American War of Independence, and had extensive land holdings in the city. Dayton eventual growth was spurred by a wide variety of inventions in the 19th century. To begin with, the National Cash Register Company was founded here, and went on to introduce the very first mechanical cash register. In the early 20th century, Charles Kettering assisted in the development of the very first electric cash register, which made the National Cash Register Company achieve national acclaim. The company as well assisted in the development of the US Navy Bombe that was a code breaking machine, which cracked German Enigma ciphers during the 2nd Great War. Dayton Art Institute
